How it began
SALEAF owes its origin to a body of the same name founded in the 1970’s by a group of South African Lebanese businessmen who identified the need to raise funds to assist in the education of members of their community.
Over the past three decades many have benefited from their efforts. There are scores of successful professionals and businessmen and women today whose achievements were made possible through the education they received which was either partially or fully funded by the original SALEAF.
Regrettably, over the years, the impetus behind that organisation wavered, eventually coming to a standstill.
The legacy is carried forward
In South Africa, our current socio-economic environment rightly requires that previously disadvantaged candidates continue to be a priority for financial support from Government, educational institutions, NGO’s and the business sector; and the demand for this assistance is significant.
This means that many South African Lebanese candidates who have excelled academically and are in need of financial assistance to further their studies are of necessity overlooked.
They say that charity begins at home, and on that basis a group of like-minded South Africans of Lebanese descent have founded a newly formed organisation to take the legacy of the original SALEAF forward with renewed vigour and determination.
The objective
SALEAF’s goal is straightforward: To educate, empower and uplift as many qualifying candidates as possible by providing them with the financial support they need to enable them to access a tertiary education and the opportunity to realise their full potential.
In addition to committing to serve SALEAF in furtherance of its objective, the founding members have pledged to donate sufficient funds to enable SALEAF to fund at least one qualifying student in his/her tertiary education in 2007.
